« Obscenity is found in the hypocrisy of laws, in the psychological numbing of the submissive mass, in the restriction of the flesh’s movements within the social field, in the culture of fear and insecurity, in the planned suffocation of experience, in the in- finity of technologies that perpetuate self-re- gulation and discipline of crowds fascinated by the spectacle of their enslavement and the promise of a new felicity».
Antoine D’Agata
The performance focuses on a character: the Man-Woman, Agokwa. It is one of the names that Native Americans give to the men-women. Two spirits is another one. They are men who live like women, dress like women. Are considered women. For centuries, they were completely integrated into Native American societies. Some were even promoted to the rank of shaman. They were therefore valued. The arrival of the settlers was an absolute disaster. They were considered as sodomite demons. The settlers thus ordered their genocide by devouring them. It was then the period of the Inquisition and the conquistadors travel with their dogues. Today a genocide of the memory is practiced, even more vicious and just as deadly. By his presence of man and woman at the same time, Yann Marussich wishes to pay tribute to the Agokwa.
